GIRL IN GOLD BOOTS-1968-Buz Nichols (Tom Pace), shady criminal type meets Michele (Leslie McRae), a waitress at a greasy spoon working with her drunk father (Victor Izay). They hit the road and go to Las Vegas where Buz says his dancer/sister Joanie (Bara Brynes) will get Michele a job. Along the way, they pick up Critter (Jody Daniels), a philosophical hippie, trying to escape the draft. A love triangle develops. Later they meet sis Joanie who works for the sleazy self-important club owner Leo McCabe (Mark Herron). He also supplies Joanie with pills and plans to replace her with Michele. Meanwhile, Buz pushes dope for McCabe and Critter washes floors. Buz gets involved in stealing drugs from a jail and then murder and Joanie has a breakdown. Critter brings all the sleazy thugs down, romances Michele and returns to be drafted while crooning a song. 

Funny low budget love story/crime drama from co-producer/director Ted V. Mikels who made the infamous ASTRO-ZOMBIES the same year (also with Pace). Mikels regular William Bagdad also has a role. Lead actress McRae was also in Mikels' BLOOD ORGY OF THE SHE DEVILS (1973) and HELL'S BLOODY DEVILS (1970) and THE FEMALE BUNCH (1971), both for Al Adamson, GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TO COUNT DRACULA (1971) and DEATHRACE 2000 (1975). Grimy bad guy Mark Herron was married to Judy Garland at the time.

The Story of a Fool

JOHNNY COOL-1963-This interesting dark gangster story begins in Sicily in 1945 with a little kid named Giordano blowing up a Nazi to save his mom who's killed anyway. He joins up with some rebels and grows up to be Dom Giordano (Henry Silva) who has to go on the run from the army during a wedding. He's saved by a deported American mobster Johnny Calini (Mark Lawrence) who trains him “to be American” then sends him to NYC where he becomes the new Johnny Calini and beats up a guy in a bar and spurns the come-ons of Elizabeth Montgomery who's raped by two corrupt cops after having dinner with Johnny. He kills both of them then runs afoul of crime boss Vince (Telly Savalas). Like a one man army Johnny goes for revenge killing various mobsters (he blows up one guy in his pool). His one man vendetta almost succeeds but Liz turns him over to the mob and they kill him. “So ends the story of a fool”. 

Several well known actors appear in pivotal one scene roles: Sammy Davis Jr. (who also sings the theme) is a dice shooter called Educated, Jim Backus (sounding like Mr. Magoo) is a corrupt land developer who's killed, Joey Bishop is an annoying car salesman, John McGiver is a Las Vegas crime boss and Mort Sahl is his bodyguard. Wanda Hendrix, Elisha Cook, Douglas Dumbrille, Joseph Calliea, Robert Armstrong and Brad Dexter also appear. Director William Asher worked on other theatrical films (including some “Beach” movies for AIP) and lots of TV shows (including over a hundred episodes of “Bewitched”, starring his future wife Montgomery, who he married shorty after this production).

Crashing Las Vegas

CRASHING LAS VEGAS-1956-Sach (Huntz Hall) gets electrified and can predict numbers on a TV game show. Slip (Leo Gorcey) wins a trip to "Sin City", where he plans to use his buddy's abilities to win enough money to pay their landlady's bills. They bring along the rest of "the gang" which by now is only Chuck (David Conlon/Gorcey) and Myron (Jimmy Murphy replacing Bennie Bartlett). Of course gamblers (led by Don Haggerty) want to know his secret and send a woman (Mary Castle) to find out. It's a typical Bowery Boys mess with Sach acting really dopey despite his new found power. 


CLV was the last of the series to star Leo Gorcey as Slip who quit after this one. His dad Bernard (little Louie Dumbrowsky in most of the run and top scene stealer) died from injuries he received in a car accident. 


The whole movie kind of reminded me of an over long second season episode of THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW. 


In fact that show's director, Jean Yarbrough made CLV and screenwriter Jack Townley wrote episodes of the show. Also rather weirdly the TV host at the beginning of CLV is played by Bob Hopkins who played a TV host on an A & C episode. And Frank J. Scannell who played a croupier in an A & C episode plays a croupier here! 


Emil Sitka also shows up!


 I've read Gorcey was "visibly drunk" during the making of this. He does act a little strange and some of his lines seem to be dubbed by someone else!

Time Travel

SECOND TIME AROUND-2002-A card dealer (Ekin Cheng from THE STORM RIDERS) from Hong Kong goes to Las Vegas to make a big score with money "borrowed" from his company. After his friend (Jonathan Ke Quan from THE GOONIES) is killed in a car crash screw up he somehow manages to travel backward in time (2 days) and tries to prevent the death. Cecila Cheung (WU YEN) plays the police detective who goes with him. It's enjoyable despite some lapses in plot. Cheng and Cheung were also in TOKYO RAIDERS and ZU WARRIORS. The director Jeffery Lau made THE EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES.
