Shatner & Spiders

KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS-1977-Rancher Colby (Woody Strode) has sick cattle. His prize calf dies. Dr. Rack Hansen (William Shatner) takes some blood samples. Entomologist Diane Ashley (Tiffany Bolling) says the calf died of a spider bite. After Colby’s dog is found dead, he and his wife (Altovise Davis) show Rack & Diane a huge mound made by the spiders. They burn the mound but that doesn't seem to make the ants go away. While Rack & Diane are out horseback riding with his niece, Linda (Natasha Ryan), Colby is killed by the spiders. The mayor (Roy Engel) decides to crop dust the area with a deadly poison but the spiders make the plane crash. Linda's mom is also done in by the arachnids. Soon they are all over town and mass hysteria takes over. The survivors hole up in a cabin, where the next day seemingly forgotten by the outside world, the entire valley is one giant spider web. Also with Hoke Howell.

Former actor John “Bud” Cardos (THE DARK (1979) directed this pretty decent low budget horror movie that's fairly creepy at times (especially the final scene). For years there was talk of a sequel form various sources but nothing ever panned out.

Elam On The Prowl

 (imdb)

THE GIRL IN LOVERS LANE-1960-Runaway rich kid Danny Winslow (Lowell Brown) meets railroad bum Bix Dugan (Brett Halsey from THE RETURN OF THE FLY (1959)) on a train car, after he's unsuccessfully mugged. They team up as drifters and land in the sleepy town of Sherman, where they have lunch at a diner run by Carrie (Joyce Meadows; THE BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS (1957)) and her father (Emile Meyer). Bix and Carrie hit it off but Danny gets in trouble with local floozy Peggy (Selette Cole). Meanwhile, local weird guy Jessie (Jack Elam) leers at Carrie and gives her the creeps. Bix has to break his first date with Carrie however when he and Danny get into a fight with some local “toughs”. After their next date, Bix and Danny get jobs at the diner. When things get serious between Bix and Carrie, he wants to blow town. Unfortunately, Carrie runs into Jessie and he kills her. Bix is blamed and arrested. Carrie's drunken father and his crew get Bix and dad tries to beat him to death. Fortunately, Danny makes Jessie confess.

Pretty depressing drama directed by Charles R. Rondeau (DEVIL'S PARTNER the same year) and written by Jo Helms who later wrote PLAY MISTY FOR ME (1971). Lead actress Joyce Meadows is still living at the time of this writing. So is Brett Halsey. Male co-star Lowell Brown, also in THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH (1962), may also still be with us...

Thanks for dreading!

Vampire

CONDEMNED TO LIVE-1935-Two men and pregnant woman are trapped in a cave full of vampire bats by some natives. The woman is bitten by a bat.

Years later “in another land” a small village is terrorized by vampire like murders. The victims’ throats are torn open and their bodies drained of blood. Most folks say it's a giant bat but a guy name David (Russell Gleason) disagrees. He thinks it's a man. Professor Kristan (Ralph Morgan) warns everyone to stay indoors and be “protected by light”. He has a hunchback servant named Zan (Mischa Auer) and is a much-admired resident engaged to the much younger Marguerite (Maxine Doyle) who seems honored by the arrangement but a little doubtful. Her childhood friend David doesn't like it. He loves her.

Anyway, it turns out that Kristan has a few faults. Like at night he turns into a creepy vampire and commits the murders that have the village so frightened! Though he complains about headaches and exhaustion, the good Prof. doesn't seem to know he’s the killer. His old friend Dr. Bizet (Pedro de Cordoba) comes calling and advises him about his engagement. Later when the vampire/professor tries to kill Marguerite, she's saved by Zan but the the villagers think he’s the fiend. When Kristan regains consciousness Bizet explains how the professor was born in a cave after his mother had been bitten by a vampire bat! After clearing Zan, Kristan jumps off a cliff and Zan follows him. Marguerite and David are free to have sex.

This dark moody horror film from Invincible Pictures was directed by Frank R. Strayer who earlier made THE VAMPIRE BAT and other interesting but mostly forgotten horror films. Soon after this he became the usual director for the BLONDIE series of movies!

Space Rocks

THE MONOLITH MONSTERS-1957-Space rocks fall on a small town and become giant sized when exposed to water. Geologist Dave Miller (Grant Williams; he starred in THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN the same year) tries to figure out why townsfolk are turning into carbon. Naturally Miller's girlfriend Cathy (Lola Albright; mainly a TV actress who died in 2017) takes kids on a rock hunt with disastrous results. Miller and the sheriff (William Flaherty) team up to find a solution and a frustrated newspaper publisher Cochrane (busy radio and character actor Les Tremayne) tries to assist them. They bring in Prof. Flanders (Trevor Bardette). A little girl in shock (Linda Scheley) helps them find a cure for the carbon crisis but the monoliths still threaten the town.

John Sherwood directed this unusual low budget '50's sci-fi film (a year after making THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US) which features no “bug eyed monsters” and a lot of talk about silica. Paul Frees narrates, William Schallert (as a weatherman) and Troy Donahue have un-billed roles.. Co-screenwriter Robert M. Freaco penned TARANTULA in 1955. Jack Arnold has a story credit.
