TARZAN AND THE AMAZONS-1945-Palmiria is a hidden city of women led by an old queen (Maria Ouspenskaya). Tarzan (Johnny Weismuller) and Boy (Johnny Sheffield) go up river to meet Jane (Brenda Joyce in her first of 5 Tarzan movies), who's been in England. Along the way the lord of the jungle saves an Amazon and takes her back to the hidden city. Meanwhile, Jane brings along family friend Sir Guy Henderson (Harry Stephenson) and some other goomers. Post operator Ballister (Barton MacLane) gets an eye full of a gold bracelet that the girl dropped and Cheetah picked up. Sir Guy and his archaeologists are interested too. Tarzan won't take them to the secret land but angry Boy does. 

Once there, the groups' lives are spared but they must remain in Pal-miria for the rest of their lives serving the sun god. The woman who Tarzan saved helps them escape but Ballister gets greedy and wants all the gold. He kills the woman and Sir Guy. Amazons pick off the escaping crooks but Ballister and his flunky Anders (Don Douglas) escape with some sacred relics. Boy is condemned to death (it really was all his fault). When Tarzan confronts the greedy duo, they fall into quicksand and die. Tarzan returns the relics and saves Boy. Cheetah is really annoying in this. 

German born Kurt Neumann (SECRET OF THE BLUE ROOM (1933)) would also direct the next two installments in the series and in 1958 made THE FLY (his last film).

SHE-DEVIL-1957-Workaholic genius bio-chemist Dr. Scott (Jack Kelly; CULT OF THE COBRA (1952)) is working and experimenting on the theory that with a little help humans may be able to cure themselves of disease. He creates a serum from fruit flies that cures some animals. Now he wants to try it on humans. His mentor Dr. Bock (Albert Dekker; DR. CYCLOPS (1940)) warns him. But later against his better judgment he lets Scott inject Kyra (Mari Blanchard), a woman dying of TB with his serum. It works and she gets better but seems to have a strange new personality. 

While in a dress shop, she attacks a man for his money. When she's trapped in a dressing room by the police she somehow transforms from black haired woman to a blonde beauty. She stays at Bock's house where his maid (Blossom Rock) is leery but Scott seems mesmerized by her. At a party thrown by Bock she dallies with a rich jerk named Kendall (John Archer) whose wife slaps Kyra. She turns back to her black-haired self and kills Mrs. K (Fay Baker). Later Kendall and Kyra marry and he complains how cold she is. He shoots her in the shoulder and on the way to the hospital she crashes the car and he dies. She escapes unscathed. Now a wealthy widow, she returns to Scott to convince him to get rid of Bock. He seems to agree but really doesn't and he and Bock plan to reverse the operation. It doesn't turn out the way they planned. 

Nice little but obscure black and white horror directed by Kurt Neumann who made the most out of low budget assignments (ROCKETSHIP X-M, KRONOS). He'd have his greatest success the following year in 1958 when he directed THE FLY. Unfortunately, he would pass away shortly after completing it. 

Star Mari Blanchard had been in ABBOTT AND COSTELLO GO TO MARS IN 1953 and other films like DESTRY (1954) with Audie Murphy and THE SON OF SINBAD (1955) with Dale Robertson. She made more movies after this (DON'T KNOCK THE TWIST (1962), TWICE-TOLD TALES (1963)) but worked mainly in TV. She died of cancer at 47 in 1970.

The Blue Room

THE SECRET OF THE BLUE ROOM-1933-On the onset of Irene Van Hoffler’s 21 birthday, she (Gloria Stuart, who was in James Cameron's TITANIC 64 years later,,,) gathers with her father Robert (Lionel Atwill) and her three best friends (all male). After the youngest of the trio Tommy (William Janney) confesses his love for her, Irene sings a weird operatic song. They all want to know more about the legend of the blue room which had been locked for 20 years after three murders had occurred there.  On a dare Tommy decides he will stay overnight in the cursed room. Meanwhile the butler (Robert Barrat) has a disheveled visitor at the back door who he tells to come back the next night. Irene is very nervous about Tommy staying in the room. The next day Tommy has disappeared and a window overlooking the moat is open. Possibly he committed suicide but the others find it hard to believe. They search for him but find nothing. Then Irene is “attacked” by a man whose shadow looks suspiciously like the guy the butler put out. That night their novelist/friend Frank (Onslow Stevens) stays in the room. While playing the piano, he's shot to death and the door is locked from the inside. A police commissioner (Edward Arnold) is called in to investigate. He questions everyone and finds a few lying. The  killer is eventually captured, though it's never explained who committed the old murders. Paul Lukas plays Capt. Brink, the one friend who manages to stay alive. (SPOILER: He's not the killer!). This is one of the earliest full length features directed by Kurt Neumann who went onto make many low budget dramas and several TARZAN films. In 1958 he was immortalized in the Sci-Fi genre when he directed THE FLY! 

Wow! Lionel Atwill was a busy actor in 1933! Besides BLUE ROOM he also starred in THE VAMPIRE BAT, MYSTERY IN THE WAX MUSEUM and MURDERS IN THE ZOO!

Boxing

THE RING-1952-This overlooked tale is about Tommy Cantanios (Lalo Rios) a young Mexican American kid who becomes a fighter to help his family and gain respect from the White community. As “Tommy Kansas” he becomes successful but his father (Martin Garralaga) and girlfriend Lucy (Rita Moreno) give him a hard time. At a party a guy dances with a glass on his head (??). After suffering several losses his trainer (Robert Osterloh) wants him to retire but his manger Pete (Gerald Mohr), doesn't have the heart to tell him. Tommy makes a comeback but to help a cigar chomping promoter (Jack Elam) Peter puts Tommy in a main event against a much better fighter (played by real life boxer Art Aragon) who promises not to hurt the kid. But Tommy double crosses him and then gets ko'd. Seeing his little brother sparring Tommy throws his gloves away and quits boxing, helps his father and gets back with Lucy. Peter Brocco and Robert Shayne have small roles. Novelist Irving Shulman (who'd done the adaptation of REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE) adapted the screenplay from his own novel.

German born director Kurt Neuman had made many Tarzan entries before this and ROCKETSHIP X-M. He later directed THE FLY. Mohr who did lots of voice-overs for many films was in THE SNIPER and INVASION USA the same year. Star Rios was later in TOUCH OF EVIL and BIG LEAGUER but died at age 46 in 1973 of liver disease.
