Cheap Western

 (themoviedb.org)

YOUNG JESSE JAMES-1960-After evil Northern troops hang his father, Jesse James (Russ Stricklyn) wants to join the rebel army to get revenge but Quantrill (Emile Meyer) doesn't want him. His brother Frank (Robert Dix) and cousin Cole Younger (Williard Parker) don't want him there either. But Quantrill has a change of heart and sends Jesse into a town in drag. He has a problem with Zack (Rex Holman) but he saves his life.

This misguided junk makes heroes out of scum while still showing they are cold blooded murders. They talk about revisionism today!

Merry Anders is Belle Starr and Norman Leavitt, William Mims and Tyler McVey have small roles. Co-screenwriter Orville Hampton worked a lot with director Edward L. Cahn and later mostly did TV work. Director William F. Claxton directed many episodes of TV's “Bonanza” and later made THE NIGHT OF THE LEPUS (1972).

Poor Patty

 (imdb)

THE SHAME OF PATTY SMITH-1962-Average girl Patty (Dani Lynn) is raped by three grease balls while her boyfriend Allan (Carlton Crane) is forced to watch (off screen). Then an on-screen narrator (Frank Biro) tells us this is a movie about illegal abortion. Patty doesn't want to tell the police or see a doctor. It's obvious her boyfriend just wants to get away from her. Her roommate Mary (Merry Anders) sends her to a doctor later on, who tells her she's pregnant. He can't help because abortion is illegal. Another doctor says he can do it for $600, but she gets fired from her job. She goes to a priest for help but he condemns her. A Swedish doctor tells her abortions are legal in Sweden. Then Allan puts her on to sleaze rag Colbert (Bruno VeSoto) who says he can get someone who can do it for $200 but she has to pawn her gold cross. She gets the abortion from an “unemployed pharmacist” and winds up in the hospital. Dr. Miller (J. Edward McKinley) and Lt. Powell (Jack Haddock) investigate and close down the illegal clinic. Despite that, it ends tragically.

I wasn't really prepared for the seriousness of this low budget, pro-abortion, anti-illegal abortion black & white drama. This is the only film directed by Austrian born Leo Handel, the executive producer of PHANTOM PLANET (1961).

Crime On a Budget

 (imdb)

THE WALKING TARGET-1960-Nick (Ron Foster; later in HOUSE OF THE DAMNED) gets out of jail after serving 5 years. The warden warns him he's a walking target because he knows where some hold up money is stashed. He meets girlfriend Suzy (Merry Anders; in THE HYPNOTIC EYE the same year) and friend Davy (Robert Christopher; in several Jerry Warren movies) but is still bitter over his jail time. A police Lt. (Harp McGuire) plans on arresting Nick when he goes for the loot.

Of course, Suzy and Davy are lovers in cahoots to get all of the illicit dough. Meanwhile gangster businessman Arnie Huffman (familiar character actor Berry Kroeger) is also after the stolen loot. A flashback reveals how Nick convinced his honest hard working now dead friend Sammy (Norman Alden) to throw in with him despite the objections of his life Gail (Joan Evans; real life goddaughter of Joan Crawford). The swag is hidden in Gail's car and thanks to a homeless guy named Packy (William Fawcett) Nick learns Gail is in Arizona running a diner. After finding out about Davy & Suzy and upsetting Huffman's plan, Nick visits Gail. She is understandable angry at him even when he tells her she can have all the cash but she relents and lets him stay at her home. Later, he gets the money. Gail convinces him to give it back and go away with her. There's a shootout and a couple of people are killed.

Screenwriter Stephen Kandel later became a TV producer/writer on “Mannix” and “MacGyver” and a few others. Director Edward L. Cahn directed this low budget thriller a year after making his last horror movie THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE.

Crime Drama

 (imdb)

AIR PATROL-1962-This is a little murder mystery that seems more like a condensed version of a TV show, a crazy whodunit about the theft of an expensive painting using a helicopter as a getaway car.

Mona Whitney (Merry Anders) gets conked on the head but is also a suspect because she once hit a cop. Grouchy police Lt. Taylor (Williard Parker; THE EARTH DIES SCREAMING (1964)) and Sgt. Kurnitz (Russ Bender) investigate and call in Sgt. Bill Castle (Robert Dix) from the police air patrol, who also narrates. Murcott (John Holland), the owner of the painting, is mad and having financial troubles. Insurance investigator Howie Franklin (George Eldredge) helps out. A faded actor (Douglas Dumbrille) also figures into the plot. Mona is forced to be the drop off and Castle follows her by chopper. Ray Dannis (THE UNDERTAKER AND HIS PALS (1966)) is a security guard.

AIR PATROL was directed Maury Dexter, who made THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH the same year. It's not very interesting but it's short!

Not Andy Milligan

 (imdb)

LEGACY OF BLOOD-1971-Relatives gather at the home of the recently deceased but still rich Preston Dean (John Carradine) for the reading of his will. They will all get a share of his estate, but they have to immediately stay overnight at his old house.

They are all a bunch of neurotics with various hangups including Gregory Dean (Jeff Morrow) and wife Laura (Merry Anders; in her last film role), Veronica Dean (Faith Domgerue) and Frank Mantee (John Russell). The sheriff (Rodolfo Acosta; also in his last movie) is called when a dog is killed but he's the first victim when his bloody severed head winds up on a plate in the fridge. "This is getting to be like some kind of horror film" says one of them. All their problems seem to stem from Dean's verbal and physical abuse of his family. After death by electrocution, the weird masochistic butler/ handyman Igor (Buck Kartalian) seems a likely suspect. There's more deaths and it ends on a comical note.

Andy Mulligan made a horror movie with the same title the same year. This LEGACY OF BLOOD resembles a Milligan production but less sleazy and shoddy. Also known as WILL TO DIE. Morrow and Domgerue, of course in better days had co-starred together in THIS ISLAND EARTH.

Director Carl Monson later made PLEASE DON'T EAT MY MOTHER! (1973), a soft-core porn version of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, which Kartalian starred in.

House of The Damned

HOUSE OF THE DAMNED-1963-Architect Scott Campbell (Ron Foster) and his wife Nancy (Merry Anders) go to do a sur-veying job at an old castle (The Rochester House) after getting a midnight phone call from a guy named Joe (Richard Crane; THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE) who they don't seem to like. They go to the castle but can't get in. Something weird is going on though as the door opens after they go away. Mr. Quinby (Dal McKennon), a real estate agent gives them the keys and a rundown on the castle including the former owner Priscilla Rochester.

The couple settle in but it's obvious they are not alone. Especially at night when some creature shuffles in and steals the house keys. Next day the missing keys turn up but with 2 keys gone. Later Joe's wife Loy (Erika Peters) shows up looking for her husband. She decides to sunbathe and while undressing is watched by a mys-terious woman. Scott and Nancy measure the house. Joe finally shows up. He and Loy seem to be having martial problems and Loy prepares to leave but is pursued by a giant (Richard Kiel; a year after EEGAH!) and disappears. The others look for her.

Nancy finds her headless in a chair but still moving! Of course when she brings the two men Loy isn't there. Later Joe and Scott break into a locked room and find the withered corpse of Capt. Arbuckle, another former owner. When Scott has a run-in with the giant he's saved by a circus fat lady (Ayllene Gibbons; later Mrs. Joyboy in THE LOVED ONE) because the captain was using the the castle to house circus people. It has a weird happy ending.

Director Maury Dexter uses a large estate as the back drop similar to his THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH.

Wet Crime Drama

RAIDERS FROM BENEATH THE SEA-1964-Bill (Ken Scott), a scuba diver hatches a plot to rob a bank on Catalina Island. He enlists his ex-friend Tucker (Russ Bender) to help him. Bill plans to scuba over from the main island to where the money is kept. Meanwhile his deadbeat brother Buddy (Garth Benton) spies on Bill's wife Dottie (Merry Anders) while she undresses. Somehow Buddy and a trouble maker named Perdy (Booth Colman) nozzle in on the caper. However before the big heist Bill catches Buddy putting the moves on Dottie and nearly kills him. They pull off the robbery but Tucker dies and then complications set in resulting in Bill being killed and Perdy and Buddy being arrested. Dolly watches the whole thing from afar.

Director Maury Dexter (THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH) had been making low budget crime dramas (and westerns) for a while. After this he went on to make MARYJANE and HELL'S BELLES and a few others before going into TV (namely THE LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE). It's pretty boring but has cool “Telstar” like music.

Quick Audie

THE QUICK GUN-1964-A gun slinger named Clint Cooper (Audie Murphy) returns to his home town to warn the sheriff (James Best) that bank robbery Jud Spangler (Ted De Corsia in a good evil role) and his gang are targeting his town's bank. He has a inane bar fight with the father (Walter Sande)) and nephew (Rex Holman) of two brothers he killed. Nobody likes him because they think he has an ulterior motive even though he warned them and stays on to help fight the gang but when he kills the father and nephew in self defense the sheriff arrests him and locks him in jail leaving the town to fend off the hombres themselves!
Later a cowardly preacher deputizes Cooper and he takes on the whole gang.

Frank Ferguson is the philosophical deputy and Merry Anders is his former girlfriend, now the sheriff's fiancĂ©. It also features Frank Gerstle, Mort Mills, Raymond Hatton and William Fawcett and is based
on a story "The Fastest Gun" which  '50's horror vet Robert Kent adapted. Director Sidney Salkow was coming to the end of his long career in TV and movies. Also in '64 he directed some scenes for the Italian lensed LAST MAN ON EARTH.

Audie Murphy was the most decorated hero of WW2. He came to Hollywood (on advice from James Cagney) and starred in a biography of his exploits TO HELL AND BACK. He made 44 movies in his career including John Huston's RED BADGE OF COURAGE but in the last 12 years of his life he made only westerns. He died at age 45 in a plane crash in 1971.

Co-star James Best starred in THE KILLER SHREWS in 1959 and went on to a successful career in TV (as actor and director). At the time of this writing there is a KILLER SHREWS sequel in the works!
