PUMPKINHEAD-ASHES TO ASHES-2006-A crazy mortician (HELLRAISER'S Doug Bradley) steals corpses and dissects them and sells the organs. The remains get dumped in the local swamp. When the town finally finds the dead bodies, a vengeful mother goes to the old witch Haggis (Lynne Verell) to summon Pumpkinhead, who goes on a killing spree. The mortician tries to kill the people responsible. 

Lots of victims spit up blood. Of course, Lance Henriksen pops up once in a while. They should have stopped at #2. Filmed in Romania back-to-back with #4. Directed by Jake West.

MESSIAH OF EVIL-1973-From a mental hospital, a woman Arletty (Mariana Hill; she was in THE GODFATHER PART 2 the same year) tells the story of how she went to a town called Point Doom looking for her estranged father. Stopping for gas, the attendant (Charles Dierkop) acts weird and gives her a warning. He gets very perturbed when a big albino stops for gas with two dead bodies in his pickup. The attendant is killed a little later. 

While snooping around town Arletty meets a freaky art dealer and his blind mother and talkative town drunk Charlie (Elisha Cook Jr.) who talks about the blood red moon and people bleeding. She meets dandy Thom (Michael Greer; FORTUNE AND MEN'S EYES) who seems interested in the legend of the blood moon, and his two female companions the stuck-up snob Laura (Anitra Ford) and the dumb Toni (Joy Bang). Later after a lot of talk, Laura decides to leave. She hitches a ride with the albino (Bernie Robinson) who eats a rat. She wanders around town, goes to a supermarket and sees a bunch of weird people eating raw meat. They chase her down and eat her. Meanwhile, Arletty reads from Dad's diary. Poor Toni! She goes to see a movie and is attacked and eaten by the audience. Thom wanders around town. Dad (Royal Dano) shows up to explain the story of a dark stranger who had been part of the Donner party. It's not a good reunion though. Arletty sets her dad on fire. Then she tries to kill Thom. The dark stranger comes back too…

The directing and writing credits of this low budget bizarro horror film go to the husband-and-wife duo of Williard Hyuck and Gloria Katz who the year before had written the screenplay of AMERICAN GRAFFITI (they also have cameos as zombies). It is a kind of eerie movie but some parts don't make sense. Some critics have praised it as a “neglected masterpiece”. Re-released under the title DEAD PEOPLE.

ED GEIN-BUTCHER OF PLAINFIELD-2007-Ed Gein (Kane Hodder) does this thing in this highly fictionalized story about the guy who influenced PYSCHO and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. It's really just an excuse to show blood and gore and exploit the too often used “based on a true story” tagline. The director of this crap, Michael Feifer made CHICAGO MASSACRE: RICHARD SPECK and other putrid movies based on real life serial killers (Ted Bundy, Henry Lee Lucas, BTK killer). He later made a lot of movies for “The Hallmark Channel”....

BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRE-1958-Transylvania 1874-Some yokels put a stake in a corpse. While burying the body a gravedigger is murdered. Then a limping guy with a deformed face gets a doctor to do a heart transplant on a dead man. When the doctor wants more money and threatens blackmail he's killed. Cut to Dr. Jean Pierre (Vincent Ball) convicted of malpractice and murder and sentenced to life in prison. He's sent to a hell hole led by the mysterious Callistratus. His cell mate Kurt (William Devlin) befriends him and tells him there's no escape. While they are working Pierre says a fallen man is too sick to work but when the boss passes by he gets up and starts working again. Later he meets Callistatus (Donald Wolfit), the dead man at the beginning. He puts Pierre to work in his lab, doing research on blood. The deformed killer is Callistatus' henchman Karl (Victor Maddern). It turns out the mad doctor had Pierre railroaded into his prison with help from a corrupt official. When Pierre's and Karl's escape plan fails, Callistatrus says Pierre was killed much to the sadness of Pierre's fiance Madeline (Barbara Shelly) who later goes undercover and poses as a housekeeper. They eventually find out Callistatrus's secret: he's a mad scientist trying to find a cure for a blood disease he acquired when he got a new heart! Karl turns on his master because he's sweet on Madeline and despite being shot several times helps bring down his nutty boss. 

The producers of this overlooked little horror film really give it a Hammer vibe, even hiring Jimmy Sangster to write the screenplay (he'd also write the screenplays for HORROR OF DRACULA and REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN the same year). Henry Cass was the director.

SANTO VS FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER-1971-The infamous doctor's daughter Freda (Gina Romand) needs Santo's blood to stay young and alive. Meanwhile she's trying to turn a man into a gorilla and building her own monster named Ursus (pro wrestler Gerardo Zepeda). She has her henchmen kidnap Norma (Anel), Santo's excitable girlfriend. Santo and Norma's sister Elsa (Sonia Fuentes) go to the rescue. They get in and out of trouble fighting Freda's inept henchmen, her beast man and the familiar looking monster with the stitches round his head. 

At one point Freda hypnotizes Norma to cut Santo's eyes out! Just when the girls seem safe they are recaptured. A showdown has the poor monster killing his creator and blowing up the whole place after getting acid thrown in his face....

Santo fights the Japanese middleweight champion in the finale and wins the title! Director Miguel Delgado made SANTO AND THE BLUE DEMON MEET DRACULA AND THE WOLFMAN the next year.

Sondergaard and Hatton

 

THE SPIDER WOMAN STRIKES BACK-1946-Jean Kingsley (Brenda Joyce) returns to her hometown after a career somewhere else to be a companion to Zenobia (Gale Sondergaard), a blind woman who lives in a dark house with her mute manservant Mario (Rondo Hatton). 

Zenobia seems a pleasant sort while Mario seems rather sinister. One night while Jean is asleep (obviously drugged) Zenobia comes to Jean's bedroom and draws blood from her. She then meets Mario in the basement where she feeds her carnivorous plants with Jean's blood! After some cattle and a little girl die, Z draws more blood from Jean. 

From a talk between her and Mario we learn Z killed the other girls who came to work for her. She promises Mario, who's sweet on Jean, that Jean won't die. Hal (Kirby Grant), a guy who once asked Jean to marry him, brings agricultural agent Moore (Milburn Stone) in to investigate. Later Jean discovers Z isn't blind and she's making the poison that's killing the cattle. Her mad plan is to drive all the farmers away and buy up all the land that once belonged to her family. In a frenzied effort to burn all the plants when suspicion is thrown on her, she and Mario die. Hal rescues Jean. 

This Universal quickie is like a TV movie running less than an hour. Since it was not a hit, some critics feel this movie signaled the end of the classic Universal Pictures horror run. 

Director Arthur Lubin directed 5 of Abbott & Costello's classic Universal films and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA remake with Claude Rains. Later did most most of the "Francis The Talking Mule" series and in the '60's made THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET.
