Dreadful Things

 (imdb)

SOMETIMES AUNT MARTHA DOES DREADFUL THINGS-1971-This is the story of two guys, Paul (Abe Zwick in his only film) and Stanley (Scott Lawrence aka Wayne Crawford in his film debut). Stanley is a pot smoking dullard who killed an old lady. Paul is his accomplice who dresses in drag. They argue a lot like a demented psychotic version of “The Odd Couple”. When Paul brings home a woman and kills her, the film turns negative. Stan hangs out with some locals and two women dance topless until he tries to strangle them. Stanley's friend Hubert (Don Craig), a drug addict comes to live with them. When a pregnant neighbor dies, Stanley cuts her unborn baby out of her. Later they decide to leave the country and hold up in an abandoned movie studio where it's revealed Paul is the one doing all the killing. He stabs Stanley to death, then commits suicide.

Director Brad Grinter is a police Lieutenant and Thomas Wood (aka Rooney Kerwin; from BLOOD FEAST 1963)) is a cop (and one of the grips). His brother Harry Kerwin was 2nd unit director. Thomas Casey, who wrote and directed this strange movie, edited MONSTER A GO GO (1965) and wrote the screenplay for FLESH FEAST (1970).

Nudie Cuties

NUDE ON THE MOON-1961-Infamous nudie exploitation film from Doris Wishman, perhaps the only female nudie director in film history.

Two stupid scientists (one young, one older) fly to the moon and encounter a race of women who wander around topless. The pair take photos and make notes while the girls show off their “moon boobs”. Their leader talks by telepathy and the young egghead falls for her. A song “I’m Mooning Over You” plays every time they meet. It’s sung by Tony Sandler who later was half of the popular ‘60’s sing duo Sandler & Young.

This color production is well photographed and the post-synch dialogue (a standard in Wishman films) is done better than usual. It was filmed in Miami.

Did Anyone Expect This?

INQUISITION-1976 -For his debut as director Paul Naschy choose a story set during the time of the Inquisition. But according to the star while researching the project (which he also wrote) he discovered that more women were burned as witches in France than in his homeland of Spain.

He plays a witch hunting priest named Bernard de Flossy traveling the plague infested French countryside. Naturally, this premise provides Naschy with another excuse for showing topless women being tortured (one has her nipple torn off; an effect he’d use again in a future movie). After much grandstanding, accusations and lectures de Flossy becomes obsessed with Catherine (Daniela Giordano). Naturally, this leads the sanctimonious priest to question his beliefs and go against his own conscious and teachings. More tragedy follows cumulating in a double burning.

INQUISTION is a well-made period piece with a seemingly decent budget and great cinema-tography and music. In fact, without the torture scenes this could pass as a mainstream costume drama!
